School of Architecture, Planning & Landscape

Design Office, Newcastle University

The Design Office (do) is located within the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape at Newcastle University and they have designed several architectural projects in and around the university, including the remodelling of Building Science, in the School of Architecture, & the reception lobby of Claremont Tower (which was originally constructed in the late 1960's).

In both instances the projects successfully build upon the rugged details and open planning of the existing buildings, by adding carefully considered spaces for social interaction and bespoke fitted furniture for exhibition of student & staff work. By introducing timber detailing to entrance areas and exposing electrical and mechnical services in certain locations, a clear spatial heirarchy is developed and the users of each building are treated to a rich variety of spaces, lighting and materials.
